Special Message on the Legacy of Ted Kennedy
We express our sympathy and sense of loss of a great advocate for people with disabilities, Edward M. Kennedy (1932-2009). His life and legacy will forever remain in the history of American disability advocacy and civil rights. He was a leader in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and was a passionate advocate for the civil rights of all Americans throughout his years of public service. "For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die." (in his 1980 speech at the end of his campaign for the Democratic nomination)
Ted Kennedy persevered and was vigilant in his commitment to his work. He understood the challenges of people with disabilities -- as a person, a son, a parent, a family member -- and as a representative of his constituency, and leader in our nation. His personal experiences, struggles and challenges helped him understand, and fueled his desire to achieve access to quality health care for all Americans. He was the third longest serving senator in our nation, serving our country for 47 years in the Senate. He will be remembered fondly as the "Lion of the Senate".
